an international oil and gas service company was pioneering solutions in a high-technology sector which had only recently become commercial.   the company had a strong research and development ethos and had a good long term relationship with a firm of uk-based patent attorneys, which filed and prosecuted patent applications on its behalf.

the technical field had seen an explosion in patent filings in just a few years, and the patent landscape was becoming increasingly populated. looking after the company's growing patent portfolio, and tracking those of its competitors, was placing an increasing burden on senior management's time. this time could have been more effectively spent on other business activities. management required more resource, but the volume of work was not sufficient to justify employing full-time legal staff.

lincoln ip was able to meet the company’s requirements by providing an attorney on a fixed-term contract to work in-house in the company’s office.  tasks included:
• day-to-day management of the company's ip portfolio;
• overseeing and monitoring work of external advisors;
• defining and implementing internal ip policies;
• overseas trips to assist with the selection of counsel in other jurisdictions;
• tracking and observing court proceedings;
• competitor watching and patent tracking;
• preparing and reviewing licence agreements.

the initial contract was renewed twice. during this time, the CTO was able to get back to the day-to-day tasks involved with driving an international business forward.
